What is a green smoothie? A green smoothie is a smoothie using fresh fruits, dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale, chard, collard as well broccoli, broccolini and carrots (to name a few). These smoothies are naturally dairy-free, using creamy fruits like banana, mango or papaya to give them a smoothie texture and they taste great.
Green smoothies are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fiber and protein. A typical recipe contains at least 3-5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. The best part is that they taste like fruit and you’ll never know there’s anything leafy or veggie in there!
The first thing you need to make awesome rich and creamy green smoothie is a blender. The blender of choice is the Vitamix 6300. You can get this at Costco for $399. Vitmix is the best blender out there hands down. I know you're probably thinking this is ridiculous amount of money for a blender, but look at it this way, it really just a little more than one trip to the doctors office. If you have one of these fabulous smoothies 4 - 5 times a week, chances are you won't be needing to go to the doctors office.
Why drink green smoothies? Here's my top 3:
1 - Increase Fruits and Veggies: Consuming the daily recommendations of 5 - 9 servings of fruits and vegetables can be a challenge. Blending several servings of fruits and veggies each into a smoothie helps ensure you meet your body’s daily nutritional needs.
2 - Decrease Your Risk of Disease and Cancer: Antioxidants are the anti-cancer phytochemicals found in fruit in vegetables. We all have free radicals in our body, which can potentially cause cancer. When we eat foods with antioxidants, the antioxidants bind to the free radicals and neutralize them, therefore reducing your risk of getting cancer.
3 - To Lose Weight: One of the easiest ways to lose weight is to add more fruits, vegetables and water to your daily diet. Successful weight loss can easily be achieved by giving up the sandwich, chips and soda for lunch a couple of days a week and consuming a green smoothie instead.
Try this for a week: at noon make a green smoothie for lunch. At 3:00 have a half sandwich or salad to get you through until dinner. You'll feel better and probably lose some weight.
